Explore Maurienne illustrated map
Map Purpose
Promote the new lower Maurienne Valley tourism entity, Explore Maurienne, as a unified tourism destination in the French Alps through an illustrated map that encourages visitors to explore the region’s landscapes, landmarks, and cultural heritage.
Challenge
Design an illustrated map for the first Explore Maurienne Magazine (created in collaboration with Alpes Magazine) that balances playful, hand-drawn illustrations with geographic clarity, highlighting key points of interest while remaining visitor-friendly and easy to navigate.
Project Description
This illustrated map was designed to showcase the Maurienne Valley’s rich offerings, from outdoor activities to cultural landmarks and regional specialties. The map opens the magazine and features hand-drawn elements as well as the three territories that form Explore Maurienne. The layout clearly marks essential sites such as the visitor center, ski resorts, and other points of interest, while giving a visual sense of the valley’s iconic landscapes.
Illustrations
Six key illustrations bring the map to life: an old iron mine turned museum, a cyclist climbing a mountain pass, a dramatic winding mountain road, the iconic Aiguilles d’Arves, and two regional emblems: Opinel knives and Beaufort cheese. The limited color palette (which uses the destinations brand colors) gives character to the map and convey the region’s spirit. Fully vector-based, the illustrations maintain a hand-drawn feel with shadows to add depth and charm.
